divest for darfur

"Your mutual fund is paying for the genocide in Darfur."

That was my wife's sole statement concerning an effort by SaveDarfur.org to get people with Fidelity mutual funds to urge the company to begin divesting. Divesting in companies that do business in nations with severe human rights abuses is a technique with a proven track record. It worked in ending Apartheid in South America, and hopefully it will work to stop the genocide in Sudan as well.

I'm calling Fidelity Friday morning and asking them to divest immediately. If you have a mutual fund with Fidelity, I urge you to do the same as well. Their number is (800) 532-5340.

At least 400,000 people have been killed in the last three years in Darfur in conditions that the Bush administration has classified as a genocide. If you want more information SaveDarfur.org has a post called "Background" that's worth checking out.
